{"id":515,"date":"2017-03-02T14:12:14","date_gmt":"2017-03-02T12:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kurantlab.haifa.ac.il\/?p=515"},"modified":"2017-03-08T13:39:40","modified_gmt":"2017-03-08T11:39:40","slug":"project-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kurantlab.haifa.ac.il\/?p=515","title":{"rendered":"Project 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><strong>Apoptotic cell clearance during development<\/strong><\/h3>\r\nDuring normal development of multicellular organisms, a large number of cells is eliminated through apoptosis and subsequent phagocytosis by \u201cprofessional\u201d macrophages and immature dendritic cells and \u201cnon-professional\u201d tissue neighboring cells. <em>Drosophila<\/em> phagocytic cells, professional macrophages and non-professional glia, are highly homologous, both functionally and molecularly, to their mammalian counterparts. Yet, phagocytosis in flies is less redundant than in vertebrates, which allows studying its molecular mechanisms in great detail.\r\n\r\nWe use <em>Drosophila<\/em> embryogenesis and metamorphosis to study the molecular mechanisms of apoptotic cell clearance during development. Apoptotic cell clearance is a dynamic process which proceeds in four main steps: (1) <em>recruitment <\/em>of phagocytes by the apoptotic cell, (2) <em>recognition <\/em>of the cell as a target for phagocytosis, (3) <em>engulfment<\/em> of the targeted cell, and (4) <em>phagosome maturation <\/em>and degradation of the apoptotic cell.
